WHAT IS ROUGHCASTING?

Roughcasting is a type of external render where a mixture of sand, cement, and small stone chips is applied to exterior walls. It creates a tough, weatherproof surface that is ideal for properties exposed to wind, rain, and freezing conditions, particularly in Scotland’s harsh climate.

The roughcast is applied over a base layer (sometimes called a scratch coat), then finished with a coarse top layer containing gravel or stone chips. The result is a low-maintenance, long-lasting wall finish with a distinctive texture.
